Coach Ingelsby

Our guest speakers, Ed Ginder and Earle Miller (pictured above) gave a well received description of the activities of the “chain gang” at UD home football games. Ed, the leader of the crew is in his 47th year of being on the sidelines.

We heard an explanation of exactly how the line of scrimmage and down and distance are accurately maintained. We also heard how the crew stays away from being flattened by on rushing ball carriers and tacklers. Basically they drop the sticks and run in the opposite direction!

The crew has received recognition numerous times over the years as to their professionalism and accuracy. We heard exactly how the 2010 National Championship crew in Frisco, TX likely cost UD the championship by removing the clips on the chain prematurely. Our gang would have not done that! Fun stories were shared about colorful sideline interactions with opposing coaches including Wayne Hardin (Temple), Mickey Matthews (JMU), Joe Girardi (Hofstra), and Andy Talley, Villanova.

Prior to the chain gang, we heard from Defensive Back Coach, Holman Copeland, who gave us the pregame report on William & Mary. Coach “Cope” disclosed a defensive strategy that worked to perfection the next day.

Next meeting: Newark Country Club, Thursday, November 11th, with Linebacker and co-Special Teams Coach, David Legg, and Basketball Coaches Martin Ingelsby and Natasha Adair. Food service at 11:15, program at noon. Members $25, guests $30.
